Bricktown CentreRSS

The South Shore of Staten Island is growing into an attractive retail location, and Bricktown Centre made a major footprint in the area with a 400,000 square foot retail center, featuring a number of large national chain stores. The site had been the borough's largest vacant city-owned parcel, and had been undeveloped woodland. Environmental concerns reduced the original plan from 67 to 43 acres.

Fresh Kills Master PlanRSS

In April the Department of City Planning presented the draft master plan for the 2,200-acre Fresh Kills area on Staten Island, previously the site of the world's largest landfill. The City envisions a park three times the size of Central Park that will evolve in three consecutive ten-year phases, costing around $100 million. In August 2005 Mayor Bloomberg announced the first project at Fresh Kills, called Owl Hollow Fields. It is a $6 million, 28-acre project that includes 10 acres of recreation space, four soccer fields, a 9/11 memorial, and fitness and nature trails. Construction on the site is slated to begin in 2008.

Staten Island NASCAR TrackRSS

A NASCAR racetrack has been proposed for a former oil tank farm in Bloomfield, Staten Island. The project, which as proposed would not only result in the racetrack but also thousands of housing units and a large retail complex, has been the subject of an increasingly vigorous community debate. Supporters of the track argue it will create needed infrastructure improvements and spur increased economic development on the island. Opponents cite harmful ecological effects and increased traffic problems as reasons to halt the project’s development.

Unable to secure political support for required land-use change approvals, International Speedway Corp ended plans for the project in December 2006, but announced that they remained committed to building in the New York region.
