Housing in Mixed-Use Development Adjacent to Rego Park Mall Stalls

Community Board 6 was informed by Vornado Realty Trust that work on the housing component of the mixed-use development project near the Rego Park Mall was on hold. Vornado, the developer, confirmed that the commercial space will go up as planned and is likely to be completed this summer. The residential space that was expected above the commercial is temporarily on hold, primarily because of the weakening economy. The project has already been scaled back since it was first presented in 2005.

Yesterday construction on a new mall in Rego Park, Queens began. The new mall will be home to a Century 21, Kohl’s, and Home Depot. Plans for the mall originally included the City’s first Wal-Mart, but the deal was ended after considerable opposition to the company’s labor policies arose.
