New Rego Park, Queens Mall
Tentatively named “Rego Park Mall II,” a new shopping mall is under construction in the Rego Park neighborhood of Queens. Initial groundbreaking on the site began in October 2006, and actual construction began in May 2007. The site, now owned by developer Vornado Realty Trust, is located at the intersection of Junction Boulevard and 62nd Drive, lies across the street from Sears. The new mall will be 277,000 square feet and will be home to Kohl’s, Home Depot, and Century 21, increasing the considerable retail options already available in the area.
In addition to four levels of retail stores, the new development will include a massive parking structure and possibly 450 new apartments. City officials are also working on adding traffic signals and increasing signage to the intersection with the hopes of alleviating traffic congestion that the mall will most likely bring to the area. The mall is slated to be complete in 2009.
