Columbus Circle
With the recent completion of the Time Warner Center, renovations to the monument and circle itself, and restoration of the 2 Columbus Circle building, the Columbus Circle area of midtown Manhattan is quickly growing into its own small neighborhood. The area, which runs between 54th Street and 63rd Street and between Broadway and West End Avenue, is seeing significant growth in luxury condominium and apartment development, with at least three major developments currently under construction. In October 2006, consumer electronics retailer Best Buy signed a 15-year-lease on 46,000 square feet just north of the Circle.

The new Museum of Arts and Design, located at 2 Columbus Circle, is set to open in the next few months, replacing Edward Durrell Stone’s Gallery of Modern Art, built in 1964, despite efforts to landmark the original building. The new building façade is now viewable and many have noticed what looks like the letter E and the letter H on the building. This resulted from a last minute design revision.

Francis Morrrone of the New York Sun argues that Columbus Circle on Manhattan's Upper West Side has failed to live up to its potential for "grandeur," citing the "chic" addition in 2003 of The Time Warner Center and the impending structure at 2 Columbus Circle, the new home of the Museum of Art and Design. According to Morrone, the buildings on the circle are out of scale and fail to relate to the circle's center, a column with Christopher Columbus at its top.

Delano Village, a large-scale apartment complex in Harlem, was sold this year to Apollo Real Estate Advisors, a large development group whose recent projects include Time Warner Center in Columbus Circle. The sale of the partially rent-regulated Delano Village in Harlem illustrates that New York’s large apartment market is not limited to midtown and lower Manhattan. Large investment is currently targeting middle-income properties across the boroughs, but will this trend last?
Time Warner Center Owners Sue Contractor

Owners of the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle are suing one of the contractors who helped design the plumbing and electricity for much of the building. A $135 million lawsuit alleges that the contractor missed so many deadlines and submitted such "unworkable" designs that extra money had to be spent to fix the problems.

Time Warner Inc. may soon seal a deal to buy control of Court TV and incorporate it with its Turner Broadcasting System Inc. The transaction may call for the relocation of Court TV offices located midtown on the east side, to the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle. Employee shuffling is said not to start until the end of 2006. Also included in the purchase is the Atlanta Braves baseball team.

Judge OK's Sale & Redesign of 2 Columbus Circle

A judge has permitted the sale and redesign of 2 Columbus Circle. Originally designed by Edward Durrell Stone, the building was passed over for landmark status by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1996. Nevertheless, various preservation groups maintain opposed to the ruling.
